Functional Basement Renovation: Chicago, IL
The Design Goal: Maximizing Functionality and Visual Openness
The primary objective for this Chicago basement was to replace the fragmented, partially finished layout with a bright and cohesive living area.
The homeowners needed the space to serve multiple functions, specifically requiring significant storage for books and collectibles without making the room feel enclosed.
Our goal was to capitalize on the lower-level footprint by introducing extensive custom elements and light-reflecting textures to eliminate the dark, cramped atmosphere typical of older Chicago basements.
The Solution: A Seamless Multi-Zone Build-Out
Maya Construction Group, led by owners Udi Yeger and Ofer Gliksman, designed a layout that balances specialized storage with expansive communal space.
We executed a full-height build-out of custom, floor-to-ceiling white built-in bookshelves along multiple walls, providing maximum organization while drawing the eye upward.
To maintain a modern, warm aesthetic, we utilized a rich golden-tan wall color to contrast the white built-ins and installed durable, oversized neutral floor tiles that flow seamlessly across the entire open-concept zone.
